You search for what you do and your town, and your competitors appear but you don't. It's frustrating, and it's usually down to a handful of fixable things.
1. Your Google Business Profile isn't set up properly
For local searches, the map listings at the top matter most, and they come from Google Business Profile, not your website. Make sure yours is claimed and verified, the right category is chosen, your opening hours are correct, and there are real photos of your work.
2. Your website doesn't say where you are or what you do
It sounds obvious, but many sites never clearly say "dog grooming in Warwick" or "car hire at Alicante airport". Google needs your service and your location in page titles, headings and the text itself, written naturally for people rather than stuffed with keywords.
3. It's slow or awkward on a phone
Most local searches happen on phones. If your site takes ages to load, or people have to pinch and zoom, they leave, and Google notices. A fast, mobile-first site is one of the most reliable improvements you can make.
4. Your details don't match everywhere
If your address or phone number is written differently on your website, Google profile and directory listings, Google trusts all of them a little less. Keep them identical everywhere.
5. You don't have many reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local rankings, and they're what people read before choosing you. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to the reviews you get.
